Gran launched herself so hard and fast that even Eve didn’t see it coming. One second she was staring at the ghost of my dear departed grandmother; the next, she was flying head first across the room, having been socked in the jaw so hard it sent her airborne. “Try threatening my Lilith, would you?” Gran hissed. “You lay one single finger on that girl and I will have you ripped apart by wolves.” I didn’t have time to ask Gran where she kept her wolves before she turned her gaze on me. “You okay, Lil?” I nodded. “Still got the rings on?” Another nod. “Looks like you’re out of luck, missy,” she said to Eve, who was slumped against the opposite wall but glaring up at us in mortified fury. “I reckon it’s probably best if you leave now. Don’t you think?”

“Oh no,” said Eve, “no, no, no. You don’t get to swan in and take over, you⁠—”

“That is enough,” Gran interrupted. “No one here cares what London thinks, Eve. You’re confusing us with people who give a shit.” My eyes widened in surprise—I’d never heard Gran so angry before. Mind you, I’d never seen her punch anyone before, either. Just shows you can never tell a person’s true personality until you’ve got yourself stuck in a life-threatening situation and need them to rescue you. “Get out,” she went on. Eve struggled to her feet, and I wondered just how hard that punch of Gran’s had been. I’ve been smacked a few times since I woke up dead—it’s pretty standard behaviour in the netherworld; no one really means anything by it—but had never suffered much more than a brief light show behind my eyelids. Eve looked like she’d just gone seven rounds with Mike Tyson. And I’m talking glory days Tyson, not the version that comes out of retirement in order to get beaten in return for a giant pay packet.

“You won’t get away with this,” Eve scowled. “You think you’re clever, but you’re not. You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

“Oh,” said Gran, “I’m pretty sure I do, actually. It’s been a long time since you got evicted from that paradise of yours, hasn’t it, girl?” An expression of pure rage flashed across Eve’s face. “And you’ve been envious of Lilith ever since.” Eve visibly shook herself and straightened up. It was as though she was growing taller, even as I watched. “Because she,” Gran went on, not moving from her spot in the middle of the room, “well now. She stood up for herself, didn’t she? Got herself vilified for it, of course,” Gran shrugged, “but what else can you expect from a society that believes women are lesser creatures? Whereas you,” she took a barely noticeable step towards the younger woman, “you got suckered into doing as you were told. Being revered with as much intensity as you were feared. It’s difficult being a woman in a man’s world,” she went on, “isn’t it? And I’d wager you know that better than most.
